I tried to explain it to my mother, and she was majorly creeped out. “Why would you watch that?”

2) The bad pilot, and the bad 2-5 episodes. Sure, there are plenty of shows that get over their bad first season (right now that would be “Parks & Rec.”), but this really hurt them because of Joss’ track record and the fact that it’s a confusing show. The early episodes were very much a turnoff, even for people who love Joss and for people like me who really wanted to like the show. It’s hard to convince people that “no, it’s really going to get better, I swear” when the road seems so long.

3)I enjoyed the philosophical underpinnings, but I tend to like that stuff. (One of the many reasons I love House so much.) For a lot of people, that’s a turnoff.
Yes, the lack of cohesion and the confusing characters was a problem. Many characters, like Sierra, had multiple names and backstories, and it was hard to keep them straight, especially as they didn’t appear in every episode. The show practically begged for multiple viewings and demanded an unusually high engagement level, which is great again if you like that stuff, but if you don’t have the time nor the inkling to follow everything super-closely, it gets very confusing. Add to that the premise of the show and the questions that inevitably arise about how the Dollhouse works, and again the crappy introduction, and it’s hard for the show to build up a sizeable audience.

But, the show was definitely heading into great territory, and this season has largely been fantastic (with the exception of the Echo as baby-momma episode). I think, had it been given more time, it really would have developed a greater following, especially with DVD sales and DVR recordings factored in. Of course, I always wish these shows had more time.

Oh, well. I say we do a special weekend marathon one day.MediaMavenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12548519999729515206noreply@blogger.com
